Hooooo’s Got Awesome News? It’s Me!

…I’m so sorry. I couldn’t resist.

This is a real thing in the world:

Holy shit it’s a book cover

Before I get all dignified, oh my holy freakin’ baby zombie santa spaghetti monster look at that cover!

You guys, I’ve been looking at it for a couple months now and I keep finding cool things in there I didn’t see before — Val has fangs! And claws! Elly has her pointy silver spike! BOOKS EVERYWHERE OMG. That font! The tag line!

My debut novel, Night Owls, will be on sale March 4, 2014* from Ace Books. My awesomesauce editor is Rebecca Brewer. That fantastic cover art is by Don Sipley.

As soon as I have links to all of those places where you can order books, I will update the hell out of this post. The feeds that govern these things are updating as we speak, so it won’t be too long.

Places with buy buttons, go!

Barnes & Noble

Right. The part where I tell you what it’s about:

From the blurb:

Night Owls book store is the one spot on campus open late enough to help out even the most practiced slacker. The employees’ penchant for fighting the evil creatures of the night is just a perk…

Valerie McTeague’s business model is simple: provide the students of Edgewood College with a late-night study haven and stay as far away from the underworld conflicts of her vampire brethren as possible. She’s lived that life, and the price she paid was far too high to ever want to return.

Elly Garrett hasn’t known any life except that of fighting the supernatural werewolf-like beings known as Creeps or Jackals. But she always had her mentor and foster father by her side—until he gave his life protecting a book that the Creeps desperately want to get their hands on.

When the book gets stashed at Night Owls for safe keeping, those Val holds nearest and dearest are put in mortal peril. Now Val and Elly will have to team up, along with a mismatched crew of humans, vampires, and lesbian succubi, to stop the Jackals from getting their claws on the book and unleashing unnamed horrors

I’ll be posting more thoughts about it in the weeks and months to come, but for now, I’m going to go run around in circles kermit-flailing dive back into my edits.

(*edited to fix the date. 2/25 might be the date they release & ship from the publisher to bookstores, so stores’ll have them by the 3/4 on-sale. Erm, if that’s too industry-speak, let me know and I’ll do a follow-up post explaining!)

While “urban fantasy” isn’t exactly my favorite cup of tea, that is one awesome-looking cover, and I’m thrilled, happy, and excited for you (without trying to be redundant!). Pretty damn certain I’ll be dipping my toes back into the UF genre with this one.

    Congratulations, Lauren!

Thankee, all! I’ll probably make this into a post of its own, but when I was asked for cover art ideas, all I said was “Please, if John Scalzi and Jim Hines do another cover art pose-off, please don’t let my cover put them in traction if they pick my book.”

  5. Chris Bauer says:

That is simply awesome. Marked the date on my calendar. Way to go.
